Autumn activities for the half term holidays

With a prime position at the gateway to the Peaks, our country estate is perfectly placed for those action-packed family adventures. From afternoons spent roaming the trails and tracks that criss-cross the region to hours of exploration at one of the Peaks’ historic houses, you’ll never be short of something to see or do in Derbyshire. We’ve put together a guide to some of our favourite activities, just in time for half term.

Hike the Peaks

Whether you take to the trails or head off the beaten track, there are plenty of routes to follow that’ll take you across the Peaks. We recommend the Dove Valley walk, which runs from Hitter Hill to the swallow hole on Dragon's Back and boasts breathtaking views across the Peak District. You can even stop off at one of the local pubs on the way for a bite to eat.

Get on your bike (or ours)

The Peaks are covered in old railway tracks that have been converted into cycle routes. These tracks offer a safe, traffic-free option for walkers, horse riders, wheelchair users, and cyclists across the stunning limestone dales. Our favourites include the Tissington Trail and the High Peak Trail.

Ride the steam railways

Discover what was once Britain’s most scenic railway route on a traditional steam train journey. This historic line was constructed over the course of twenty years and has been lovingly restored. The perfect day out for both adults and little ones, you can even purchase food onboard the train and enjoy a meal as you travel across the Peaks.

Make a splash

Just a short drive from the hotel, Carsington Water is a popular spot for families looking to get out on the water. You’ll find facilities for fishing and bird watching, as well as an activity centre and play area for the kids. Or you can make the most of the reservoir’s canoeing, rowing, windsurfing and kayaking lessons and equipment for an adrenaline-filled adventure.

Uncover the area's heritage

Derbyshire and the Peak District are home to some of the country’s best-loved historic attractions and country houses, and just a stone’s throw from our very own country house is Chatsworth. This grand stately home is brimming with ancient art, stunning architecture, and glorious gardens, just waiting to be explored.
