Quintessentially English
Culland Hall Garden
SET IN THE ROLLING HILLS OF THE DERBYSHIRE DALES
Private Garden Tour
Culland Hall Garden is a quintessential English style garden set within the rolling hills of the Derbyshire Dales. Created over the past 30 years, this romantic four acre garden has been strongly influenced by the famous garden at Sissinghurst Castle. Located just 20 minutes from Wildhive Callow Hall, why not combine a visit to this beautiful garden with an overnight stay ~ ideal for gardener groups and societies.
Culland Hall Garden is open by appointment all year round to visitors.
In 1995 Simon and Lucy Thompson and their family moved into Culland Hall, a house that Simon’s father, Sir Edward Thompson, built at the outbreak of the Second World War. Simon’s mother was a very keen gardener but, by the time Simon and Lucy moved in, her garden had essentially disappeared, so the first year of gardening involved chainsaws and JCBs.
Faced with a blank canvas, Simon and Lucy were lucky enough to have advice from Mark Anthony Walker and Simon Johnson with regard to the structure of the garden..
The gardens consist of various colour themed ‘rooms’- Rose Garden, White Garden, Walled Victorian Kitchen Garden, colour themed borders and woodland walk. Set within a late 18th century parkland and lake.
The garden was featured in Country Life in 2014 in the Collectors issue and Lucy and Simon were hugely honoured when the garden was selected as one of 62 chosen gardens to be included in the prestigious book ‘English Gardens’. A book which features gardens from the archives of Country Life magazine.
